Angels.
One of my favorite books is the epic poem “Paradise Lost” by John Milton; which concerns both the Biblical expulsion from Eden as well as the origin of Satan and his devils, as exiles after a failed rebellion in Heaven.
William Blake interpreted Satan as the tragic hero, fruitlessly battling against an essentially non-humanistic and totalitarian Godhead. Satan is likely the most “human” character in Paradise Lost, but as the audience we are supposed to accept his defeat, his obsession with hierarchy is presented as an irrational attempt to surpass Divinity. Like Scarface. Just like Scarface.
